CPAC-Nanos Daily Election Tracking CP 35, LP 28, NDP 19, BQ 10, GP 8 (ending October 3)

256 comments Latest by Zab

The latest CPAC-Nanos tracking poll shows a seven point margin for the Harper Conservatives over the Dion Liberals. The Liberals have held on to post debate gains in Quebec but Ontario remains a tie between the Tories and the Grits.

In the post English debate world, however, Stephen Harper and Jack Layton have regained some lost ground on their daily leadership index. The research at this point suggests that the French debate has buoyed the image of Stephane Dion as well as Liberal support in Quebec while the Conservative numbers have slipped in Quebec.

Tune in to Goldhawk Live with Dale Goldhawk tomorrow night at 7 pm (EST) on CPAC for a discussion of our latest polling results. For more detailed information on the methodology and the statistical results visit the Nanos Research website at Nanos Research.

Methodology and Results A national random telephone survey is conducted nightly by Nanos Research throughout the campaign. Each evening a new group of 400 eligible voters is interviewed. The daily tracking figures are based on a three-day rolling sample comprised of 1,200 interviews. To update the tracking, a new day of interviewing is added and the oldest day dropped. The margin of accuracy is ±2.8%, 19 times out of 20 for 1,200 random interviews.

The numbers in parenthesis denote the change from the previous Nanos Research Survey completed on October 2, 2008.

It seems every time I read a newspaper lately, there are Liberal supporters and candidates complaining about the possibility of the Conservatives getting a majority when "60% of Canadians are opposed to the CPC".

One wonders where these people were when the Liberals under Chretien were getting majority governments when "60% of Canadians are opposed to the Liberal Party."

Any Liberals want to comment???

I rest my case, the extreme changes yesterday have corrected themselves, the previous wild shift in Dion's leadership numbers have dropped by 19 points, close where he was prior to glitch.

Either way, it will be intresting to see where the voting preference numbers move in the next few days, this will reveal where the numbers will stabilize until election day, of course barring any major gaffes by the parties.

The new 7 point spread of the Conservatives over the Liberals should widen over the next 2 or 3 days as the rollling average fully recognizes the positive responses from the english debate. Dion is not doing well in the Leadership Index.

Watch for more Liberal dirty tricks as they get more desperate as the campaign comes to a close.

I t will be interesting westener. i like the previous responses. personal attacks, no response to your hypothesis. You cranked some estimates a few days ago, they proved quite accurate. I think you should gues on tory and liberal support for tomorrrow. i will post go back look at trend then come back with my prediction. By the way I am from ontario and have been out west a number of times. Never noticed any smog, only great peaople, great montains, and big skys. Here in Ontario smog in toronto is brutal. Did you no fighting co2 has nothing to due with reducing smog. Smaog comes from carbon monoxide not carbon dioxide, there is a big defference. Harper relizes thats whey the government started an official monitoring program on air quality and is working not only to ruduce co2, but alos carbon monoxide.
I know smog doesnt impact you so I though I would educate your new freinds.

Something is very funny with liberal numbers. Methinks yesterday must have been a rogue poll. The liberals were consistently polling 26 prior to yesterday. Then Whammo 30. It shouldnt swing that fast on a three day rolling average. Did they poll as high as 38? (26+26+38)/3=30). (not likley but only nic know) The 26 numbers may not be right, but they are unlikely to be far off, given theliberals have had a rolling average of 26 for 4 straight days. The dip today may mean they are as as low as 20 in todays poll.
26 drops off replaced by todays number. (26+38+X)/3=28 solve for x. My math says X=20.

That cannot be right but it is very strange to see liberals drop so much after peeking so much yesterday.

Conserves fairly consistent. Up and down by 1 over last 7 days.

My prediction for next poll

Libs 26
cons 36

Game on,

This is why I don't understand why no one supported Rona Ambrose's Clean Air Act.

It seems like the world is simply repeating CO2, CO2 etc. when it comes to the environment and ignoring everything else. During the Live Earth concerts I saw videos of kids talking about how much they love the environment. Then they said we needed to get rid of carbon dioxide because of overfilling landfills (?).

The Clean Air act was supposed to reduce CO2 but also take care of smog as well. Well, carbon dioxide isn't even in smog. That is caused by carbon monoxide, sulfur monoxide and sulfur dioxide.

But people are so brainwashed they didn't care.

Fortescue . Cars create smog and since a lot of Albertans commute to work from Calgary and Edmonton in Westjet planes up to Fort Mac there isn't isn't much smog on the ground but lots at 30,000 feet. They can't build housing up north because they have to keep the water they have to produce the oil we are sending to the States. Four barrels of water for every barrel of oil produced might dry up their supply really quickly.

just wondering where this water goes, do they bury it in a landfill site, do the export it, or do they clean it and reuse it? My understnading was the latter. Is there some other place we should be exporting this oil to? US pays there bills dont they? Do you have a problem with us exporting oil, or is it just a general concern with respect to producing the oil?

Fortescue. The problem I have is that we import oil from foreign countries for two thirds of our population while exporting to the U.S. but suffer the damage to our eco system that can be lowered . That would reduce corporate profits so so we can't do that can we? People should be aware that tar sands developement would stop without government subsidies and corporate welfare. As for the water I think some of it goes up in the atmosphere and comes down where ever the wind takes it .It must be going somewhere since the Athabasca river is almost dried up. Maybe the resident expert can tell us?

Maybe you could encourage legislation to forbid the importation of foreign oil to eastern Canada from off shore (Venezuela, Columbia and Saudi Arabia) until all the Canadian production from BC, Alta, Sask and NFL is consumed by Canadians. With increased pipeline capacity western oil and NFL oil could be shipped to Ontario and Quebec before any foreign oil could be used. This would greatly increase the cost of oil to easterners and would encourage more production in Canada to meet Canadian demands.

Great idea, eh!

westerner. Did you read the previous posts on the legislation that forced Ontario to buy western oil for higher than world prices to help establish your oil industry? The trans-Canada pipeline that was built by the federal government and then sold to private companies makes tons of money for the multi-national oil companies . The same hated NEP tied the price of natural gas to the price of oil which should be unrelated as one has little to do with the other . Why does my gas bill increase when speculators drive up the price of a barrel of oil? The east is making those companies that create the GHG emissions huge profits because of legislation . I would love to tell Hugo Chavez and the Saudi oil sheiks what to do with their oil but we need to become self sufficient across the country before we can do that. Why do other oil producing countries charge their citizens
much less than world prices.? Should we be doing the same thing to make us competitive in the global market for our exports which would again benefit the whole country rather than just the blue eyed sheiks. Your hatred of the east is based on the false belief that the NEP was totally responsible for what happened in 81 and that is just not true.

You can't talk out of both sides of your mouth, I thought the whole premise behind the tax shift was to make energy more expensive to discourage use. Now you are saying lets create a canadian only market for our energy resources so that it will be less expensive. Which is it?????

HC. That is the problem.People don't understand the Green shift. The plan is not to increase the price of fuel. The plan is suppose to tax polluters so you are admitting that big oil are the major sources of GHG. If they don't clean up their act they would pass on the added tax burden to consumers who have some choices to reduce their use of the fossil fuels and thereby lowering demand for those products which would by the rules of supply and demand cause a reduction in price. The revenue from the polluters would then be used to lower taxes on income giving consumers more money to spend on products that companies who are smart enough to stop polluting can now produce at a lower cost since they don't have to include the carbon tax in their costs.Companies can decide to lower there carbon output or pay higher taxes. If you want to keep driving the gas guzzling four by four then you will pay. We can make choices to reduce our carbon footprint , save money and get income tax cuts at the same time. Makes sense to me.

A small income tax decrease and a whole mess of program spending. The tax shift is very explicit about the tax rates that would be imposed on various commodities. You stilli indicated that you would like to create a canadian market for canadian resources and decrease costs to canadians. That would only encourage energy use. You did not address that. Is this the Liberal hidden agenda? Nationalize the energy sector?

HC. Well at least you can see there will be income tax reductions which most Conservatives denied. A made in Canada price could lower costs of producing products for export and the carbon tax would keep our use of fossil fuels down .By making us more competitive globally the employment would add revenue to fund those programs . Of course a minority government could not implement all their campaign promises and only be able to do what all parties agreed to. Unless that is a CPC minority that abuses the rules to force the opposition to accept their legislation with non-confidence motions because they can't force an unnecessary election.

In addition, all of Canada is benefiting, Alberta makes a net per captia transfer to federal coffers of about 3 times that of Ontario. The rest of Canada benefits greatly from that transfer thru equalization etc. The current labor market here has been acting as a bit of a safety valve for the rest of the country as economic activity has stalled there. A lot of material, equipment etc. required currently here is sourced elsewhere in the country. Look at the big picture.

Nobody is disputing that fact, now you have to accept the fact that it was a good decision and now the rest of the country as well as Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC (yes, there are oil and gas fields in the BC Peace River Region) are all benefitting from that policy.

HC. The difference is that when Ontario was making transfer payments to even Alberta those dollars were from the taxes I paid . The money being paid now by Alberta is not coming out of your pocket, it is coming from royalties . That makes Ontario tax payers' contributions to confederation more of a personal thing but you only look at the figures that show how much the province is sending to Ottawa. Your tax dollars are not going to equalization but the royalties are. Big difference.

You dislike exporting oil to the US while importing off shore oil. So the solution is to stop all shipments to the US and send all western oil and NFL oil to central Canada. Sounds like a plan you would support.

Craig . When I was in Calgary in June I met people who were forced to live in camps for ten days and fly back to Calgary since building could not keep up with the demand for housing. I have no idea how many are doing this but I imagine the Westjet flight schedule could give us some clue. Are all the so called experts wrong about the looming crisis of water shortages? Why are they building a pipeline from B.C. to Alberta? Who actually knows what the facts are? Not me.

But your argument there just contradicts what you said earlier. You said that they can't build houses in FM due to the water shortage, now you say people cannot keeps up with the demand for housing.

FM is experiencing a huge housing boom and its true, it is hard to keep up especially with rising costs and expenses.

Why were you in Calgary meeting these people? Was it a secret meeting to make up more "facts"?

I only read the opinion of the experts who fear what they can see coming. Are they right or just making up stories? Went to a very nice wedding and Calgary has gained a great new citizen whose roots go back 300 years in this country.

Domestic water usage would not be the issue as it in a normal urban setting is only about a 50 to 70 imperial gallons per day or about .25 to .3 cubic meters per day (per capita). A population of 100,000 only uses 25 to 30 thousand cubic meters per day, which is miniscule compared to industrial requirements. The issues in Municipality of Wood Buffalo are more related to treatment and distribution capacity than raw water availability.

Most domestic usage is ultimately treated and returned to the river systems.

Some of the pollution caused by the oil industry is damaging the eco system but there is little being done to reduce that or make big oil pay.

Ten in and ten out has been normal in any large scale or remote development across the county almost forever. It makes no sense to construct permenant housing for relatively temporary construction projects. There is less than a month until a great election, an election that will decide the next Prime Minister of Canada. The person elected will be the Prime Minister of all Canadians, not just the Liberals, PC's or the NDP. To show our solidarity as Canadians let's all get together and show each other our support for the candidate of our choice. It's time that we all came together. If you support the policies and character of Stephen Harper, please drive with your headlights on during the day. If you support Stephane Dion or that other guy, please drive with your headlights off at night. Thank you and drive carefully

Opposition leaders -- who regularly accuse Harper of harboring an extremist agenda and of taking his orders from Bush -- blamed the prime minister for Canada's sluggish economic growth and said he should do more to help people who had lost their jobs.

"Mr Harper is a fan of the laissez-faire approach to the economy, like Mr Bush, and we can see the disaster unfolding now in the United States," said Gilles Duceppe, leader of the separatist Bloc Quebecois.

The value of Canadian workers' pensions has dropped by C$90 billion ($90 billion) in two days -- it's unbelievable. And you say that everything is going well," said Jack Layton, leader of the left-leaning New Democrats.

"The policies that you are suggesting today are the same ones used by George Bush ... Where is the action plan to protect people?"

Nelson Wiseman, professor of political science at the University of Toronto, said he's not surprised the Liberals have turned to negative ads.

"They probably regret they didn't start right out with it," Wiseman said. "They made the big error of running on something rather than running against something."

"Towards the end of the campaign, if you feel you're going to lose or even if you're leading but you perceive a serious threat, you go negative on the other side. The more negative you get at the end of the campaign, the more it reflects the dire straits you are in."

Dunne said such ads are aimed primarily at party faithful - or at least sympathizers - which makes it a form of preaching to the choir.

"The people they are trying to get behind this are their own supporters," he said.

"You probably won't change an awful lot of minds with this."
